When searching for a name for the website, nothing except ‘A Private Family’ came to mind.  You will find no titles amongst the Cade relations, nor will you find people who were famous; just the life of a ‘private family’, as told through their letters and their diaries.

While a fair amount is known about earlier members of the family, the site is centred round one particular person, the only one with any claim to fame: Edwin Arthur Cade (1857-1903), along with his immediate circle of relations: parents, siblings and children.

The collected information on the history of the family was researched by a grandson of Edwin Arthur Cade, John Ashbrook Flower (1928-2011).  Eschewing the benefits of modern technology it was compiled, over many years, through visiting churches, museums and the Public Records Office.  It may not be completely accurate – but is as accurate as is he was able to ascertain.

There is no-one living on the family tree but if, in time, the diaries of EAC’s daughter, Ethel Della Cade, are published, then the family history will be brought up to 1966.

If the complete diaries of (Edith) Adeline Maitland (Smith) are added to the website, (1903-1968) then some of the generation born before then will be revealed – but only as children.

These are the records, gathered and retained, over and for many years.  Letter-writing is now a dying art; what is here should be preserved; the originals of many have been returned to the relevant branches of the family Cade.
